Manchester United goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar is expected to be sidelined for two months after undergoing surgery on a broken finger and bone in his left hand.The 38-year-old Dutchman was hurt saving a penalty from Danijel Pranjic in the Red Devils' 7-6 shoot-out defeat to Bayern Munich in the pre-season Audi Cup in Germany last week.
Van der Sar is not expected to be back in Sir Alex Ferguson's plans until late September, meaning Ben Foster and Tomasz Kuszczak will bid to start Sunday's Community Shield game with Chelsea and the Premier League opener against Birmingham on 16 August.
Foster is likely to be given the nod after being hailed as the best English goalkeeper in the Premier League by his manager. As yet the 26-year-old has made limited appearances at Old Trafford due to injuries and Van der Sar's form.
Foster, who was sent on loan at Watford from 2005 to 2007, has played only 10 times for Manchester United, but signed a new four-year contract this summer.
United play Valencia at Old Trafford on Wednesday evening and Ferguson will use the match to asses which keeper will become first choice.
